Equus

        Although the
fossil record of the family Equidae boasts at least three dozen genera, only
one genus, Equus, has survived to the present (MacFadden 1999).  Two
hundred and thirty species of the genus Equus have been named, but
only six to eight of these have survived into recent times, the number being
subject to debate among different classification schemes (MacFadden 1999).
