Burchell's Zebra, Equus burchelli
Burchell's
zebra, also known as the plains or common zebra (Clutton-Brock 1992),
is found in the grasslands and savannas of eastern and southern Africa,
often roaming in large herds (Clabby 1976, Sterry 1994). Although
the true Burchell's zebra, the subspecies Equus burchelli burchelli,
went extinct in 1909, the species includes various subspecies that continue
to flourish on the African continent (Clabby 1976). These subspecies
may be distinguished from one another by their different striping patterns,
and the species as a whole can be distinguished from the other two extant
zebra species by their characteristically broad stripes (Clabby 1976). At
an average size of 13hh, it is also one of the smaller species of zebra (Clutton-Brock
1992).
