Mountain Zebra,
Equus zebra
E.
zebra, commonly known as the mountain zebra, is found in the mountainous
regions of western and south-western Africa (Clutton-Brock 1992, Sterry
1994). Its numbers have been severely reduced by poaching and by habitat
loss due to agriculture, and it is now listed as an endangered species
(Clutton-Brock 1992, Sterry 1994).
The mountain zebra is similar
in size to the plains zebra (13hh), but has the distinguishing features
of a dewlap on its throat and a "gridiron" pattern of stripes on its rump
(Clabby 1976).
