deciduous: type of tree that loses its leaves during periods of drought or harsh weather (e.g. a maple tree losing its leaves each fall) (Campbell and Reece 2002)
digitigrade: "toe walking," in which the metatarsals/metacarpals contact the ground (like a person on tiptoe). Used by e.g. dogs and cats (Damman et al. 2005)
dorsal stripe: dark stripe running from the withers to the base of the tail (Clutton-Brock 1992)
grassland: biome dominated by grasses
hh (hands high): unit of measutring horses, from the ground to the withers. One hand is equal to to 4 inches (~10 cm) (Clutton-Brock 1992)
orthogenesis: "straight-line evolution," where there is a single, linear path from ancestor to descendant, with no side branches (MacFadden 1994)
savanna:
type of tropical grassland with spaced-out individual trees and distinct seasons (Campbell and Reece 2002)
ungulates: hoofed animals (MacFadden 1994)
unguligrade
: "claw walking," in which the tonails contact the ground (like a ballet dancer). Used by e.g. horses and deer (Damman et al. 2005)
