        There
is evidence to indicate that the horse was first domesticated as many
as 6000 years ago in the Ukraine, where it was used to herd cattle (Clutton-Brock
1992). Since then, humans have selectively bred horses for various purposes,
and as a result more than 150 different breeds of horse are recognized
today (Draper 1996).  The domestic horse, Equus caballus, ranges
in size from the tiny 7hh falabella to the 17hh shire (Harwood 1996),
and colour variations include flashy appaloosas and paints, browns, bays,
duns, and nearly every colour from white (seen in albino horses) to pure
black.
