Asiatic Ass, Equus hemionus

                The Asian
wild ass can be found ranging from northern India to Syria (Sterry 1994).
It is a desert species which is adapted to living in arid conditions
and which prefers habitats that include large tracts of open landscape
(Clabby 1976, Sterry 1994).  Although five species of Asian wild ass
(including the onager, kiang, and hemiones) have been identified, some
unifying identifying features are found among all Asian wild asses.  These
include a sandy-coloured body with a light muzzle and underbelly, a dark
dorsal stripe, and ears of an intermediate size between those of a domestic
horse and those of the African ass (Clabby 1976).
