Neanderthals have wider hips than Cro-Magnons. Initially this was thought to allow for a longer gestation period in order for infants to be larger and less fragile to the cold. This was ruled out when it was determined that the female members have the same size birth canal as Cro-Magnons.

The hip bone is larger and is rotated outwards which was better for climbing abilities and more rugged lifestyles. It is interesting to note that the Neanderthals have a more gracile pubic ramus, even compared to modern H.sapiens sapiens. Their pubic ramus was long and slender whereas ours is shorter and robust.
