Introductory Comments: Among paleoanthropologists there exist several different views regarding the evolution of the genus Homo. A considerably important topic of dispute would be the rightful place of Homo neanderthalensis (or Homo sapiens neanderthalensis) in the evolutionary tree. Species: A group of organisms that can interbreed. If scientists can prove that there was interbreeding between Neanderthals and Cro-Magnons, then the true place of Neanderthals amongst Homo sapiens will finally be determined.
