• Devonian was known as the age of the fishes because it was the most dominant animal at this time.
• This statement is actually misleading since fish actually appeared 100 million years earlier in the late Cambrian.
• The first skeletal outlines were found in the Ordivician, but well preserved skeletal material doesn't appear until the Silurian.
