Examples of Rhamphorhynchoids-Page 2

Rhamphorhynchus

Six species of Rhamphorhynchus (To hear pronunciation choose: Mac/Win) have been described (as of 1991), and they all have been found in Late Jurassic sediments of Africa and Europe. These were small pterosaurs, having a wingspan less than one meter, and a body length comprised mostly of tail and head.

The jaws contain an intermeshing of teeth; the teeth of the upper and lower mouth slope forward. This teeth configuration is perfectly suited for hunting small fish, and in some extremely well preserved fossils, bones and scales of fish have been preserved in the stomach region.
