Gatineau Park is located in the Gatineau Hills of Quebec. It is roughly 35,000 hectares in size. The Gatineau Hills are the roots of the Laurentian Mountains. As the roots of the mountains began to rise they were buried by sediments from the Champlain Sea. When the collision creating the Appalachian mountains occurred, faults were created as well as the escarpment in the park. During glaciation much of the sedimentary rocks from the Ordovician have been scraped away leaving the Laurentian Rocks once again and the Gatineau Hills.
