Sugarcane and its by-products were once the economic bedrock
of the country; now tourism has taken its place. About 450,000 people visit
the island each year, not counting another 433,000 cruise ship passengers
(mainly from Canada and the U.S.). Other important sectors of the local
economy include: light manufacturing of goods such as garments, furniture,
and electronic products and food resources such as vegetable and fish for
local and hotel consumption.
