Mammoth Fossil Finds

The first complete specimen of a frozen mammoth was discovered in Siberia in 1806. Many Mammoth specimens have since been discovered in Siberia, Europe, and North America. Mammoth DNA was first extracted from remains by scientists in 1978, and in the early 1980’s the study of mammoth blood cells showed that mammoth blood is similar to that of the Asian Elephant. In a very popular find not too long ago (in 1999), a fully frozen intact primigenius (Wooly Mammoth) was discovered in Siberia. A slight contradiction to the belief the Mammoths went extinct 11,000 years ago was discovered when dwarf mammoths were discovered on Wrangel Island in the Arctic Ocean which were dated back to only 3,700 years ago.
